What to Bring to a Bodybuilding Show: The Complete Packing List

By the Muscleology Editorial Team | July 2026

Muscleology athlete with a stack of products — packing for show day

Show day is 10–14 hours of hurry-up-and-wait in a crowded venue where the vending machine is your only backup plan. After months of prep, competitors regularly sabotage their look because they forgot food, brought the wrong tan supplies, or spent four hours cold and hungry backstage. Pack the night before from this list and show day becomes the easy part. Print this page and check things off.

The Non-Negotiables

  • Suit / trunks — plus a backup if you own one. Pack it first; competitors have genuinely arrived without it.
  • Registration essentials: federation card, ID, entry confirmation, music (on a USB and your phone if your federation allows routines).
  • Tanning: your appointment time if the show uses an official tanner — or your own base/top coat, applicators, and a dark old towel. Add glaze/oil only if your federation allows it.
  • Robe or loose dark clothing that slips on without touching the tan — button-up or zip-up, never a pullover. Slides for your feet; heels (bikini/figure) in the bag, not on your feet all day.

The Food Bag

Super8 BCAA and electrolytes — sip through the long show day

Backstage food is the difference between looking full at finals and flat at 7pm. Pack a small cooler:

  • Your planned meals in containers — exactly what worked during peak week, portioned. Typical picks: chicken and rice, rice cakes, plain bagels.
  • Pump-up carbs and sodium: rice cakes with honey, gummy bears or a sugary drink for right before stage, and something salty per your coach's plan.
  • Fluids: water (sip normally — see our peak week guide on why heroic water cutting isn't the move), plus an electrolyte + amino drink like Super8 for the long day.
  • Post-show: whatever celebration food you've been dreaming about — and a scoop of Nitro^UP for the drive home before the restaurant.

  • Resistance band + light dumbbell access varies by venue — a band always fits in the bag (your entire pump-up can be done with one)
  • Phone charger + battery pack (the day is LONG and your check-in time will move)
  • Bag for the dark towel, wipes for tan smudges, and hair/makeup touch-up kit
  • Safety pins, scissors, bikini bite/adhesive (bikini & figure), lip color that survives 10 hours
  • Headphones, a snack you're allowed, and something to read — boredom management is real
  • Cash — some venues and tanners are still cash-only

For Your Support Crew

Spectators: normal casual clothes are fine (jeans and a tee is the uniform), bring cash for tickets and vendors, and expect a long show — prejudging and finals are often separate sessions hours apart. If someone's coming to help you backstage, make sure they're on your pass list with the federation ahead of time.

The Night-Before Ritual

Pack the bag completely, lay out your morning clothes, confirm your check-in time and tan appointment, charge everything, and get to bed — sleep does more for your look than any backstage trick. Then go enjoy the day you spent 16 weeks earning. First show? Read the full first-show prep guide, and have your post-show plan ready before you step on stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I eat backstage at a bodybuilding show?

Exactly what worked during peak week — small, familiar meals of easy protein and fast carbs (chicken and rice, rice cakes with honey). Show day is never the day to experiment; pack everything, because venue food is a gamble.

What do you wear to a bodybuilding show as a spectator?

Casual clothes — jeans and a T-shirt is standard. Shows run long, so dress comfortably and bring cash for tickets and vendors.

How early should I arrive on show day?

Follow your federation's check-in email, but plan to be early — athlete check-in, tanning touch-ups, and lineup ordering all take longer than scheduled, and prejudging waits for no one.

Can I bring a helper backstage?

Usually only with a backstage pass arranged in advance — policies vary by federation and venue. Check before show day; an extra set of hands for tan, food, and pump-up is genuinely valuable.
