The Creatine Label Audit

The 30-second audit

Almost every creatine tub on the shelf contains the same molecule. What separates a $19 tub from a $45 tub is where the powder was made, what else came along with it, and whether the brand will show you. Here is how to tell, standing in the aisle, in about thirty seconds.

Run these five checks on any tub

Check 1

Does the label name the source, or just the molecule?

“Creatine monohydrate” is a chemical name that anyone can print. Creapure® is a registered trademark belonging to a single plant in Trostberg, Germany, and it can only appear on the label if that is genuinely what is inside. A brand paying for the licensed ingredient will always say so — it is the expensive part. If the tub only says “creatine monohydrate,” the powder is almost certainly generic, and generic is overwhelmingly made in China.

Generic is not automatically bad. Unnamed is the problem — you cannot audit what will not identify itself.

Check 2

Is creatine inside a “proprietary blend”?

If the ingredient panel shows a named blend with a single total weight, the individual doses are legally hidden. A “7.2 g Strength Matrix” can be 5 g of creatine and 2.2 g of filler, or 1 g of creatine and 6.2 g of whatever is cheapest that month. Both are legal. Both print the same.

Walk away. There is no version of this that works in your favour.

Check 3

Do the servings multiply out?

Multiply grams per serving by the number of servings. That number should land close to the net weight on the front. If a tub claims 5 g × 100 servings, it should weigh about 500 g. If it weighs 300 g, either the scoop is smaller than advertised or the servings are.

This single piece of arithmetic catches more overstated tubs than any other check on this page.

Check 4

Is there a lot number, and will they send the certificate?

Every legitimately manufactured batch carries a lot number and a corresponding certificate of analysis. You do not need to read it — you need to find out whether asking produces one. Email the brand, quote the lot, ask for the COA. A manufacturer that tests its own batches will send it. A brand that buys drums and re-labels them often cannot, because nobody ever tested that specific lot.

The response time tells you as much as the document.

Is it plain, or is it a story?

Creatine monohydrate is the most-studied sports supplement in existence, and it is cheap. When a tub needs a new molecular form, a patent, a buffering system or an absorption technology to justify its price, that is marketing filling a gap where evidence should be. See the table below.

The forms, and what the research actually shows

Every alternative form of creatine is sold on the same promise: better absorption, less water, smaller dose. In head-to-head trials against plain monohydrate, none has established a meaningful advantage.

Micronized monohydrate Better absorption It is monohydrate, milled finer. Mixes better. Absorption is unchanged — and that is fine.

The short version: if a tub costs more than plain monohydrate and the reason is the form rather than the sourcing, you are paying for chemistry that has already been tested and did not win.

The claims that legally mean nothing

These phrases are unregulated. Any product may print any of them without testing anything.

On the label What it actually guarantees
“Pharmaceutical grade” Nothing. There is no such regulatory grade for supplements.
“Lab tested” Nothing, unless it names the lab and the lot. Tested for what? By whom? Which batch?
“Clinically proven” Usually that creatine as an ingredient has been studied — not that this product was.
“Premium quality” Nothing. It is an adjective.
“Made in a GMP facility” That the facility follows manufacturing procedures. It says nothing about what went into the drum.
“99.9% pure” with no source named An unverifiable claim about an unnamed powder. With a named source, it is checkable.
“Creapure®” A licensed trademark tied to one named plant. This one is real, and it is checkable.

What you are actually screening for

Creatine is synthesised, not extracted, and the synthesis can leave residues behind. The three that matter are dicyandiamide and dihydrotriazine — both by-products of the manufacturing route — and creatinine, which is what creatine degrades into when it is made or stored badly.

None of these are things you can see, taste, or test at home. That is precisely why sourcing is the whole game: you are not evaluating the powder, you are evaluating whether anyone competent was watching when it was made. A named source with published limits is checkable. An unnamed drum is a coin flip, and you flip it every single day for years.

Dosing, without the folklore

The maintenance dose

3–5 g per day, every day, indefinitely. Larger people sit at the top of that range. Timing does not matter much — total daily intake and consistency are what fill the muscle.

Loading is optional

20 g per day, split into four doses, for 5–7 days will saturate muscle stores in about a week. Skipping it and taking 3–5 g daily reaches the same saturation in roughly three to four weeks. Loading buys you time, nothing else. If it upsets your stomach, skip it.

Cycling is unnecessary

There is no evidence that receptors downregulate or that you need a break. Stopping simply lets stores fall back to baseline over about a month.

The water thing

Creatine draws water into muscle cells, not under the skin. The scale moves in the first week or two. That is intracellular water in the tissue you are training, which is the mechanism working, not a side effect to manage.

If nothing happens

Roughly a fifth to a third of people are low responders, usually because their muscle creatine is already near saturation — common in people who eat a lot of red meat and fish. Nothing is wrong with the product or with you.

Two things that keep resurfacing

Hair loss: traces to a single small 2009 study in rugby players that measured a hormone conversion rate, not hair. It has not been replicated, and no study has shown creatine causes hair loss.

Kidneys: in healthy people, long-term use has not been shown to impair kidney function. Creatine does raise serum creatinine, which is the marker used to estimate kidney function — so it can make a routine blood panel look alarming while nothing is wrong. Tell your doctor you take it. If you have existing kidney disease, ask them first.
