C4 Without Creatine: What to Take Instead

Short answer: C4 Original has long included about 1 g of creatine nitrate per scoop. If you already take creatine properly, that 1 g is redundant — and if you don’t, it’s far below the dose the research actually supports. Either way you’re better off with a creatine-free pre-workout and a separate 5 g of creatine monohydrate.

We make pre-workout for a living — ours and other companies’ — in the same Davie, Florida facility since 2003. So here is the honest version of why people search for this, and what to do about it.

Why people want C4 without creatine

Search “C4 without creatine” and you’ll find a lot of noise. In our experience there are only three real reasons, and they’re all reasonable:

  • You already dose creatine separately. You take 5 g of monohydrate daily. A pre-workout that sneaks in another gram of a different creatine salt just muddies what you’re actually taking.
  • You train in the evening. Some people split creatine away from a heavy stimulant dose, or take it on rest days when they’re not touching pre-workout at all.
  • You’re cycling off. You want the energy without the creatine, for a few weeks.

Notice what’s not on that list: creatine being unsafe. It isn’t. Creatine monohydrate is the most-studied sports supplement there is. The problem isn’t creatine — it’s creatine at the wrong dose, in the wrong place.

The real issue: 1 g isn’t a creatine dose

This is the part most articles won’t say plainly, because most of them are written by people who have never blended a batch of anything.

The dose with actual evidence behind it is roughly 5 g of creatine monohydrate per day, taken every day — training days, rest days, all of them. That’s the number the research keeps landing on.

A pre-workout carrying ~1 g of creatine nitrate gives you about a fifth of that, in a form that costs more per gram, on the four days a week you happen to train. It is enough to print “creatine” on the front of the tub. It is not enough to do the job.

So the honest framing isn’t “creatine bad.” It’s that a gram of creatine in your pre-workout gives you neither a real creatine dose nor the freedom to dose it properly. You end up paying for both and getting neither.

One caution: Cellucor sells several different C4 products and the formulas don’t all match — some versions contain no creatine at all. Check the panel on the tub in your hand rather than trusting a blog post, including this one.

What to take instead

Split the job in two. A pre-workout that does energy, focus and pump — and a creatine that does creatine.

1. A creatine-free pre-workout

Our Sledgehammer contains no creatine. Not “low creatine” — none. Here is the entire active panel, because we don’t use proprietary blends:

Sledgehammer — every active

Ingredient Per scoop
Beta-Alanine 1,600 mg
L-Arginine 1,000 mg
Agmatine Sulfate 500 mg
Caffeine Anhydrous 300 mg
Infinergy™ DiCaffeine Malate 100 mg
Alpha-GPC (50%) 250 mg
Green Tea Extract (50% EGCG) 200 mg
Piperine 5 mg

Creatine content: none. Beta-alanine sits inside the 1.6–6.4 g/day range in the ISSN position stand.

A word on the caffeine: this is a strong pre-workout — noticeably stronger than C4 Original, which sits around 150 mg. If you’re coming off C4 and you’re stimulant-sensitive, start with half a scoop. And don’t take it within five or six hours of bed; we’d rather you sleep.

2. Creatine, dosed properly

Pure Power is 5 g of Creapure® creatine monohydrate per scoop, 60 servings — two months. Creapure is made at a single dedicated plant in Trostberg, Germany, and batch-tested to 99.9% purity. Unflavored, so it disappears into whatever you’re already drinking.

Take it every day, not just training days. That’s the whole protocol.

If you’d rather have it all in one scoop

Some people genuinely want one tub. If that’s you, Category5 is our stim-free pre-workout with a full 5 g of creatine built in — not a gram. It won’t give you the caffeine hit; that’s the trade.

Frequently asked questions

Does C4 have creatine in it?

C4 Original has long listed about 1 g of creatine nitrate per serving. Cellucor sells several C4 variants and they don’t all match, so check the supplement facts panel on your specific tub.

Is creatine nitrate better than creatine monohydrate?

There’s no good evidence that it is. Monohydrate is the form with decades of research behind it and it’s the cheapest per gram. The dose matters far more than the salt.

Does Sledgehammer have creatine?

No. It’s a stimulant and pump formula with no creatine of any kind, which is exactly why it stacks cleanly with a separate 5 g of monohydrate.

Can I take creatine and pre-workout together?

Yes. Timing has very little effect on creatine — what matters is taking roughly 5 g every day, including rest days. Take it with your pre-workout if that’s easiest to remember.

Is Sledgehammer stronger than C4?

On stimulants, considerably. Sledgehammer runs 400 mg of caffeine from two sources against roughly 150 mg in C4 Original. If you’re sensitive to caffeine, start with half a scoop.

What should I take if I want no creatine and no stimulants?

Neither of these, honestly. Skip the pre-workout and use Super8 for aminos and electrolytes during the session instead.
